Chapter 7

The evening meal could not go fast enough. James thought he deserved a sainthood for patience during dinner. Lady Charlotte was gracious enough to leave before they served dessert. He thought she was rather pleased with herself for helping his cause in courting Flora. A serving maid accompanied Lady Charlotte to ensure any nosey neighbors thought Flora had departed with her.

Once they had left, he closed the door to the drawing room. At last they were alone. He was like a stallion biting on his bit to get to his mare, but he didn’t wish to rush Flora. He understood this was a conflicting step for her. She sat on the settee in his drawing room, twiddling with the pearls at her neck.

“Would you like dessert or more wine?”

“I could not eat a thing, but maybe some wine.”

He sat beside her and took her hand in his. “We don’t have to do anything tonight. We can simply enjoy a drink and talk. I’ve waited this long, a few more days or months won’t matter.” Liar. He wanted her more than his next breath.

She did not answer him directly. “If you’d like dessert, feel free.”

He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “My dessert would be to undress you.”

Time stood still as they gazed at each other. The fire in the hearth crackled, the clock on the mantle ticked, and he could hear her breathing.

Finally, after what seemed to be forever, she slowly leaned in and kissed his lips. The kiss lingered and if he didn’t move, the kiss might last an eternity. Slowly she deepened the kiss, her tongue probing his mouth until he opened and let her in.

She tasted of heaven.

He pulled her roughly into his arms and took over the kiss, while his hands skimmed her soft curves. Her arms encircled his neck and she sunk her fingers into his hair with a low moan.

He pressed her back into the settee and lowered himself on top of her.

He’d found paradise.

His hand slipped under her gown and he traced her long legs with his finger and felt her shudder. He could take her here, now… but he wanted their first time to be in his bed.

He slowly ended the kiss and pried her arms from his neck. Linking his fingers with hers, he asked, “I want you. I want you more than my next breath. But not here. In my bed—where you’ve always belonged.”

She gave a lazy, sensual smile, like a cat stretching and thinking of a bowl of cream. “I hope you’re not expecting me to walk there. My legs have turned to jelly.”

Thank God.

He stood in one fluid movement, Flora in his arms, and as if his life would end if he didn’t hurry, they made it up the stairs to his bedchamber.

He kicked the door shut behind him, crossed the room, tossed her onto the bed, and followed her, trapping her body beneath him.

“You can hardly undress me if you keep me pinned to the bed,” she teased.
